Fairfax Neonatal Associates (FNA) is deeply honored to share that the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has been officially named the Alan E. Silk, MD Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. FNA is grateful for our more than 50-year partnership with Inova and the privilege of serving newborns and families in our community. This special recognition celebrates Dr. Silk’s decades of compassionate care, clinical excellence, and lifelong commitment to giving every baby the strongest possible beginning.
Dr. Silk has been a dedicated neonatologist with FNA since completing his fellowship in 1987, serving as the first director of the NICU at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and later as Chairman of Pediatrics and Neonatology.
Inspired early in life by his father, a pharmacist who knew every patient and their family personally, Dr. Silk chose Neonatology because of the profound impact that immediate, life‑saving care can have on a newborn and their loved ones. In his work, he often speaks about how caring for critically-ill infants brings families together and creates lasting bonds that extend far beyond the hospital walls.
Dr. Silk’s philosophy centers on family‑centered care– partnering with parents as active members of the NICU care team, keeping them informed every step of the way, and encouraging them to be involved from admission through discharge. Every care plan is tailored to the unique needs of each baby and family, with communication and empowerment as core tenets.
The NICU at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, one of the first in the country to feature all private rooms, continues to offer family‑centered, high‑quality care for fragile newborns, supported by round‑the‑clock neonatology coverage and a skilled multidisciplinary team.
The celebration of the newly named NICU was filled with smiles, pride, and heartfelt gratitude from everyone present, a fitting tribute to Dr. Silk’s many years of service and an inspiring reminder of FNA’s ongoing dedication to excellence in neonatal care.
